FUNCTION OF GLAND, AND PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF DYSFUNCTION: Thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronin (T3) are the two main hormones excreted by the thyroid gland to enter body cells and modulate their metabolism: too little amounts of either or both produce hypothyroidism; a state of lowered metabolism with resultant sluggishness, intolerance to cold, easily fatigued individual, decreased formation of red blood cells, bilateral symmetrical alopecia (hair thinning to hairlessness) and increased pigmentation of the skin. This is the most common dysfunction of the thyroid and many times contributes to the developing obesity of the patient, (animal and man).
Too much hormone, hyperthyroidism, produces an increased metabolic rate of the body’s cells, characterized by nervous, thin individuals (in man, protruding eye balls can be a feature), and increased red blood cell formation.

HYPOTHYROIDISM
Hypothyroidism will be discussed since this is the most frequent disease of the thyroid we see in animals (mainly dogs).
The thyroid, like any endocrine gland is influenced by a balance of other endocrine glands: pituitary (the source of thyroid stimulating and thyroid releasing factor hormones), the adrenal gland, and sex endocrine glands. It is also influenced by the availability of iodine, a necessary component of its thyroid hormones. Any imbalancing of any of these endocrine glands by tumors, toxicities, inflammation, and neutering (removing the sexual glands of male and female many times develop obesity) all will influence the thyroid hormonal output. Blood tests are so variable in animals for testing thyroid/pituitary function, that I do not use them as a diagnostic, rather, I look at all the causative factors including the animal’s physical condition to evaluate a hypothyroid state.
